SPRINGS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Our Fish

We always try and use the most responsible of partners, from salmon farms to local producers, sometimes some of the products we sell do come from further away but we only use local business to supply them and so to minimise the travel.

The majority of the surplus food waste is used by a local fisherman as bait.

The salmon skins are also often used and recycled by a local artist.

The polystyrene boxes that we receive our fresh fish in are used for insulating our fridges and freezers.

Our Logs

We only use oak logs to smoke all our fish, this comes from a wonderful local supplier Stubbs Copse Woodyard.

Our outdoor smokers have been redesigned in-house so that we can reduce our log usage by 60% in the last 2 years.

Our Packaging

As you all know packed seafood is nearly always in plastic. We have moved away from fully printed packaging which is not recyclable. We are moving over to eco vacuum pouches and will stop using plastic interleaves shortly. We are currently testing out beeswax paper as we believe this is best. The label is the only part left that we are working on to be fully recyclable. We do also offer all our customers the option to have our products wrapped in paper only, this does effect the shelf life, but due to our traditional curing you still get an excellent amount of time to enjoy the product. Allowing the product to breath though enhances the flavour, I can assure you it’s the best way to have it

When we pick and pack we reuse the cardboard products that are delivered into us as much as possible.

At work

We recycle any of our excess cardboard, paper and plastic through our local council. We have put it in place that they only come to collect it once full.

Energy

All the energy we use at Springs is from renewable sources. We have also reduced our energy consumption by half over the last 3 years by insulating and upgrading our coldstores, we have replaced the shop fridges and freezers with new efficient ones.

We also recycle the heat from our shop freezer to warm our offices and shop.

Our delivery vans

We have upgraded all our vans to Euro 6 engines, we would love to be able to use hybrid vans but they simply don’t have the technology yet for a usable refrigerated van. We will always try and delivery our products on our own rounds if not we will send using  Parcelforce.
